The #1 Question to Ask Every Potential Employer
A follower on my TikTok recently asked, “Are there ways for folks to identify any business or organizations that are practicing decolonizing the workplace?”
This is one of my favorite questions in the world. How do I know that I am entering a decolonized work environment?
You ask one singular question to your potential employer. This one question can tell you so much. Not just the words they give you, but the way in which they respond.
The question is, “How do you operationalize diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging in your place of work?”
I hear so many people say, “I’m scared to ask that question because I’m gonna scare somebody off.”
Let me tell you this…
Any leader who is asked that question and who is actually walking the talk, who is doing the work, is going to be delighted that you are asking that question. They are going to want every opportunity to brag about what they are doing in their work environment, how they are leading folx, and the exact steps that they are taking.
Operationalizing values means the practical steps a potential employer is taking to provide inclusive, respectful environments that value each voice and who amplify voices which are normally on the margins.
Ask this question. It’ll also be a green light for you on their end.
